The Wandering Sea

The sea that left Marta's town took a fishing boat with it. Out on water with no shore, Tomás writes back.

The letter

Keep walking. I am rowing.

The film is narrated from Tomás's reply, written at sea and sent the only way he can: in a bottle.

Marta,

The sea took me with it. We were hauling nets when the shore let go of us, and by noon there was no land in any direction. Only water, moving as if it were late for something.

I have not touched ground since. The nets come up full. The gulls follow us for a day, then give up. I count the stars you taught me, and they are all in the wrong places.

The men say the sea is looking for somewhere to rest. I think it is running. I think it is ashamed.

At night, far off, there is a small light. Too low to be a star. Each night it is a little closer.

I know whose hand is holding it.

I will put this in a bottle. The sea owes us that much.

Keep walking. I am rowing.

How it was made

A fiction, made with AI

None of these are photographs. The boat, the men and the endless water were made with generative image, video, voice and music tools. They were directed, selected and edited by hand, frame by frame and line by line.

This is the answer to The Receding Sea. The first film is all dry land and waiting; this one is all water and moving. The rule was that no shore may ever appear, until the last image, where Tomás's bottle comes to rest beside Marta's lantern on the seabed. Every piece is labelled as fiction.
