The Receding Sea

One Tuesday morning the sea went out from a small harbour town and never came back. Marta writes to the one it took with it.

The letter

Tell it we haven't moved

The film is narrated from a single letter, written by a woman in the town to her husband, whose boat was out when the water left.

Tomás,

The sea left on a Tuesday, a little after five. No storm. It simply went out, and forgot to come back.

The boats lie on their sides like tired dogs. The children climb down the harbour ladder and walk where the fish used to be. The old men stand at the wall every morning, as if waiting were a kind of work.

Everyone says the water went looking for something. I think it went looking for you.

So I keep the lamp lit. Each night I carry it a little farther out, so you'll know which way is home.

If the sea finds you first, tell it we're still here. Tell it we haven't moved.

How it was made

A fiction, made with AI

None of these are photographs. The town, the people and the vanished sea were made with generative image, video, voice and music tools. They were directed, selected and edited by hand, frame by frame and line by line.

The rule for the world was simple: the sea must be entirely gone. Early drafts that read as an ordinary low tide were thrown out and remade until the seabed ran dry to the horizon. Every piece is labelled as fiction, because the work is about memory and waiting, not about documenting a real place.
